Sarah and John were married in a little chapel near the courthouse. There were no witnesses, just the young couple and the lady who married them.  It was a very quick ceremony. Afterward, they drove to her parents’ house to tell them the news. Then the young couple drove to their house.

There was no honeymoon, not even a night away in a hotel. It would be 20 years before they had a honeymoon.

Sarah had dreamed about drifting off to sleep happily in her husband’s arms. Instead, she hung on to the side of the 3/4th size mattress (between a twin and a full), listening to John snore. She wondered if she had made the right decision.

Sarah didn’t get her church wedding, her white dress, or a honeymoon, but she got something else, more precious than gold. She just didn’t know it yet.
